Northy Privacy Policy

About Northy
Northy is a home services app in Canada that connects homeowners with local service providers. You can reach us any time at northyapp.bc@gmail.com.
This policy explains what personal information we collect, how we use it, and your rights under Canadian privacy law. That means PIPEDA, and provincial privacy law such as BC PIPA where it applies to you.
What we collect
- Account details: your name, email address, phone number, and address.
- Phone verification: we verify your phone number by sending you a code over SMS. The number is confirmed through Firebase Authentication. A verified number is required to leave a review.
- What you create in the app: job requests, quotes, messages, photos, and reviews.
- Provider details: your business name, services, coverage area, pricing, availability, and any licence or insurance documents you upload.
- Payment details: handled by our payment partner Stripe. We never store your full card number. If you are a provider, Stripe also collects government-issued ID and banking information to verify your identity, under Stripe's own policies.
- Device information: basic details needed to run the app, and a push-notification token so we can send you job, quote, and message alerts.
How we use your information
To run the marketplace so you can post jobs, send and accept quotes, and schedule and track work. To take payments, send notifications, provide support, keep the community safe, and meet our legal obligations.
AI features
Some optional features send your content to Anthropic, PBC to generate a suggestion. There are four:
- Suggesting a service category, title, and description from a photo of the job you want done.
- Writing or tidying a job description from what you typed or dictated.
- Preparing a how-to guide for a provider, which sends the job's title, description, and its photos.
- Tidying a provider's dictated summary of work they completed.
We send this content to generate the result and we do not use it for anything else. What Anthropic does with what it receives is governed by their own policies. See Anthropic's Privacy Policy.
AI suggestions may not always be accurate. You are responsible for reviewing and correcting a suggestion before you use it. Photos you attach to a request are separately stored by Northy and shown to providers, which happens whether or not you use an AI feature.
What other people can see
Your public profile is visible to other users. For providers this includes your business name, service area, rating, reviews, and portfolio. Your private contact details, meaning your email, phone number, and exact address, stay hidden. They are only shared with the other person once a quote is accepted or a job becomes active.
Reviews are public, and they stay on the job record after an account is deleted.
Who else we share with
We never sell your personal information. We share it only with:
- Google and Firebase for sign-in, database, storage, push notifications, and address lookup through Places.
- Stripe, Inc. to process payments and verify provider identities. Stripe acts as an independent data controller for what it collects. See Stripe's Privacy Policy.
- Anthropic, PBC for the AI features described above.
- Law enforcement if we are required to by applicable law.
Keeping and deleting your data
You can delete your account any time from your Profile. Deleting turns your account off right away and permanently removes your personal data after 30 days. If you cannot open the app, email us from the address on your account and we will complete the deletion for you within 30 days.
Records of finished jobs are kept in a form that no longer identifies you, as explained on our Delete Account page.
Security
Your data is encrypted while it travels to and from the app, and contact details are protected by security rules so other users cannot read them. No method of transmission over the internet is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.
Your choices
Under PIPEDA, and provincial privacy law where it applies to you, you have the right to access, correct, or request deletion of your personal information. You can do all three from your Profile, or email us at northyapp.bc@gmail.com with any privacy question.
Age
Northy is for adults aged 19 and over. This is our own minimum rather than a legal age, and it applies everywhere we operate. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under that age.
Updates to this policy
If we make changes, we will update the date shown at the top of this page. We will tell you about material changes in the app.
